Frequently asked questions about the remote-controlled winch

• Is the remote system standard, or do I have to order it separately?

  No — on no KGD winch is the remote system standard. All electro-hydraulic models (EH, SA, Q) are prepared plug-and-play, the system itself comes as an accessory at extra cost — you plug in and go, no workshop. Important: the mechanical M series cannot be upgraded to remote — no hydraulic block, no slot. Anyone reliant on remote needs an EH, SA or Q winch.

• What range does the remote system have in the forest?

  Terra FA5: technically over 300 m in clear sight, practically 150–200 m in the forest (vegetation absorbs signal). More than enough for normal skidding in the stand. Holzleitner: shorter practical range, well suited for short distances.

• Can I retrofit remote control?

  Yes, all EH, SA and Q models from model year 2004 (Eco series) are prepared plug-and-play — delivery by post, fitting in a few minutes. We check older machines on request: depending on hydraulic preparation.

• Can remote control be retrofitted to my existing KGD winch?

  Yes — all EH, SA and Q winches from model year 2004 are prepared plug-and-play for remote control. Send the system by post, plug it in, done. No conversion, no mechanic on site needed. The M series (mechanical) cannot be retrofitted — it has no hydraulic block.

• What does rope unwinding actually give me?

  Rope unwinding actively pushes the wire rope out of the winch — you no longer have to pull it out by hand. With remote, it all runs from your belt — you walk to the log, carry the rope along, attach, pull it in.

• Why did the KGD 65 SA win 1st place in the comparison test?

  The KGD 65 SA took 1st place in the 2025 Landwirt winch comparison test, chain winch category. Technical equipment, safety system, ease of use and robustness were assessed. The test result reflects exactly what KGD customers know from everyday use: low power requirement despite high pulling force, flat design with more visibility, SBS as a full-fledged brake system. It wasn’t one special feature that won — it was the overall design.

• How far does the remote transmitter reach?

  That depends on the remote system. Entry-level systems typically reach 100–150 m outdoors with a line of sight. In the stand with obstructions, expect 50–80 m. That is enough for normal skidding — for professional work you choose systems with greater ranges.

• Which remote systems are compatible?

  KGD recommends Terra FA5 Profi and Holzleitner Basic — both are tested, plug-and-play and proven on our machines. Other remote systems should always be checked with us first before you buy.
